Russian Hypermarket Owner Signs Ingenico Terminal Deal

All of Russia’s Auchan hypermarkets will deploy Ingenico payment terminals by the end of 2012, the global payment technology vendor announced Jan. 24.

Auchan selected Ingenico’s iSC250 terminals, and 1,700 had been deployed as of last month in 22 hypermarkets. Terms were not disclosed.

The terminals allow customers to use a touchscreen to sign for their card purchases and to skip the signature step altogether for small amounts, Ingenico spokesperson Rémi Calvet tells PaymentsSource.

“Auchan is the first major retailer in Russia to adopt our payment [products],” Calvet says.

Auchan operates 49 hypermarkets across Russia under the Auchan Russia, Auchan City and Nasha Raduga brand names, as well as four “Auchan Garden” stores.

The first hypermarket to roll out the terminals was Moscow’s Auchan Sokolniki, with 138 lanes equipped with the technology. The terminals send receipts and signature samples directly to the host server, the company said.

The large built-in screens also allow retailers to display advertising and promotions to customers during the checkout process.

Like Ingenico, the Auchan Group is based in France. As of the end of 2011, the company reported 1,375 hypermarkets and supermarkets in 12 countries and 262,000 employees. It says it generated 42.5 billion euros (US$55 billion) in revenue last year.
