Technology and Internet risks are increasingly well understood. But as countermeasures remain elusive or expensive, the exposures appear no less frightening.
In January, Heartland Payment Systems, a Princeton, New Jersey, company that processes about 100 million credit and debit card transactions per month on behalf of more than 250,000 merchants, disclosed that it had been a victim of a “widespread global cyber fraud operation.”
